How to Prepare for Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment

If you’ve ever felt nervous about visiting the dentist, you’re definitely not alone. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and it can make even simple checkups feel overwhelming. That’s where sedation dentistry comes in—a way to help you relax and get the care you need without stress or discomfort.

At Desert Ridge Dental here in Albuquerque, we offer several safe sedation options tailored to your needs, whether it’s a little nervousness or more serious dental fear. But to get the best experience, a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s how you can get ready for your sedation appointment so you feel calm, confident, and comfortable.

Know What Type of Sedation You’ll Get

First things first: it’s helpful to know what kind of sedation you’ll be receiving. We offer three main options:

  • Nitrous oxide : You breathe it through a small nose mask and feel relaxed but awake. It works fast and wears off quickly, so you can usually drive yourself home.
  • Oral sedation : You take a pill before your appointment that calms you down and makes you drowsy but still awake.
  • IV sedation: This is stronger and given through an IV line. You might drift in and out of sleep and have little memory of the procedure.

Your dentist will recommend the best one for you based on your anxiety level, medical history, and treatment plan. Knowing what to expect makes a huge difference in feeling prepared.

Have a Chat With Your Dentist First

Before your appointment, you’ll talk with your dental team about your health history and any medications you take. Be open and honest here—it helps us keep you safe and tailor your sedation plan just right. If you have allergies or chronic conditions like heart issues or sleep apnea, make sure to mention them.

This pre-appointment talk is also the perfect time to ask any questions or share your concerns.

Follow Fasting Instructions Carefully

If you’re having oral or IV sedation, you’ll likely need to avoid eating for about 6 to 8 hours before your appointment. Drinking might be limited a few hours before too. This fasting helps prevent nausea or complications during sedation.

For nitrous oxide, fasting usually isn’t necessary, but double-check with us to be sure. If allowed, have a light meal a few hours before your visit to stay comfortable.

Arrange a Ride and Support Person

Since sedation affects your coordination and alertness, it’s important to have someone drive you to and from your appointment if you’re getting oral or IV sedation. That person can also stay with you afterward to make sure you’re feeling okay.

Even if you’re just using nitrous oxide, having a friend or family member nearby can help ease any nerves.

Dress Comfortably and Prepare Mentally

Wear loose, comfy clothes on appointment day—something that won’t restrict your arm if you need an IV. Bring a light jacket in case you feel chilly during sedation.

Try some deep breathing or listen to calming music beforehand to help relax your mind. Remember, sedation dentistry is designed to keep you safe and comfortable!

What to Bring With You

Make sure you have:

  • A list of all medications and supplements you take
  • Any forms or paperwork from our office
  • Your ride or caregiver
  • Something to keep you entertained if your appointment is long

What Happens After Your Appointment?

After your procedure, you’ll rest in our recovery area until you’re alert enough to go home. Depending on your sedation, you might feel groggy or a bit “out of it” for several hours.

Here’s how to take care of yourself afterward:

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Start with soft, mild foods as your mouth wakes up
  • Avoid driving, drinking alcohol, or making big decisions for at least 24 hours
  • Take it easy and get plenty of rest

If you feel anything unusual like severe nausea or confusion, give us a call right away.
